O clipe de Meltdown foi lançado cerca de 10 dias depois da música, e cerca de um mês depois do começo de sua gravação, em fevereiro. Um fato marcante de sua produção foi a estreia de Taeyeon como diretora, atuando em conjunto com o time da R. Entertainment. Metade das filmagens foi realizada na Soksagwineun Jajaknamusup, uma floresta na cidade de Inje-gun, enquanto a outra metade foi realizada em antigas fábricas polonesas, mais especificamente na cidade de Minsk.

Um fato marcante de sua produção foi a estreia de Taeyeon como diretora, atuando em conjunto com o time da R. Entertainment. Metade das filmagens foi realizada na Soksagwineun Jajaknamusup, uma floresta na cidade de Inje-gun, enquanto a outra metade foi realizada em antigas fábricas polonesas, mais especificamente na cidade de Minsk.
O vídeo começa com o mesmo visual da capa da canção, em uma fria escala de cinza em uma área semi-aberta dentre as árvores. Taeyeon vaga pela densa névoa no ritmo dos primeiros acordes do violão que inicia a canção, olhando a neve em volta de si mesma, que representa o estado passivo e frio de seu emocional. Antes da introdução acabar, a câmera foca no movimento de um de seus pés.
Antes que aquele pé se desgrude do chão, o take muda, o mostrando em um lugar diferente, mas com o mesmo foco e ângulo. Agora cantando a primeira estrofe, Tae é vista vagando pelo corredor de uma fábrica, cenário que representa a satisfação de encontrar algo diferente, o paralelo ao seu vazio emocional na neve. Em grande parte da cena, ela só vaga pelo longo corredor, mostrando que não está realmente realizada, mexendo em ferramentas e equipamentos desligados algumas vezes para tentar se entreter. Em certo ponto, ela se assusta ao perceber que ligou uma grande máquina, que é ligada a uma esteira de ferro.
O pré-refrão volta a mostrar a cantora na neve, agora sem o efeito cinzento, mas ainda com muita neve e névoa ao seu redor. Na fábrica, ela é mostrada se afastando da máquina que havia ligado sem querer, partindo para olhar o conteúdo de algumas caixas de madeira. Antes que o refrão comece, o instrumental se estende, diferente da versão original da canção, dando espaço para o som de algo metálico caindo no chão. Olhando diretamente naquela direção, Kim vê que uma alavanca da máquina que havia ligado caiu (ou foi retirada).
O forte refrão chega junto à algo novo: um ator de cabelos escuros, cujo rosto não é revelado ainda. Ele se sentando em uma das caixas sendo levadas pela esteira, fazendo Taeyeon rapidamente começar a correr em sua direção. A mesma cena de corrida é mostrada no cenário da floresta, em um ângulo diferente, mas quando ela volta a ser exibida na fábrica, Tae é vista parando em frente a esteira a observando, não vendo nada além de caixas. Para o pós-refrão/segunda metade do refrão com repetições do título da canção, uma bela fotografia é mostrada quando Tae é filmada na floresta, se aproximando das árvores e dublando a canção enquanto a névoa ao seu redor parece se dissipar.
A segunda estrofe volta á fábrica, mostrando Taeyeon andando ao lado das esteiras, seguindo sua continuidade, as vezes sendo vista dublando os versos, outras vezes observando tudo ao seu redor. Em certo momento, ela vê uma passagem que não havia notado antes, uma entrada para outro local onde as esteiras continuam. Ela pega uma caixa, para que possa usar de degrau para subir na escada, e a cena logo se alterna, mostrando o mesmo movimento de subida, dessa vez para cima de uma grande pedra entre as árvores, que, surpreendentemente, não está coberta pela neve.
O segundo pré-refrão então começa e mostra Taeyeon se deixando levar pela esteira, agora deitada nela, segundos antes de passar pelo pequeno espaço coberto por cortinas que levava à uma outra sala. Ela se levanta da esteira e pula para o chão, começando a observar a nova grande área que parece ser lotada de áreas diferentes. Antes do refrão começar, ela é mostrada novamente na neve, dublando o último verso do pré refrão de maneira que passasse sua emoção.
Novamente, o refrão chega junto de uma surpresa. Um vulto passa pela tela, levando Taeyeon, antes que o "fantasma" finalmente se revele. Suas roupas são semelhantes às de Tae, parte de cima brancas, parte de baixo pretas. Oh Sehun (ator e integrante do grupo EXO) é visto sorrindo para Taeyeon de maneira sugestiva, segurando ambas suas mãos contra a parede, antes que a posição dos dois mude com o rápido movimento de Taeyeon, que segura Sehun contra a parede, aproximando seu rosto do dele. Para o pós refrão, alguns takes de Taeyeon entre as árvores são mostrados. Ela está encarando a câmera fixamente, como se estivesse olhando para alguém (Sehun), que após poucos segundos de observação, torna sua expressão vazia em um sorriso, antes que o sorriso do próprio Sehun seja exibido, de volta na fábrica.
A bridge da música, uma versão mais calma da primeira metade do refrão, é acompanhada pela cena em que Taeyeon e Sehun estão de volta à primeira área da fábrica, sentados no chão, com suas costas contra parte da máquina na qual haviam mexido no começo do clipe. Os dois se beijam lentamente, profundamente, por não mais de 3 segundos. A música pausa, e um estranho barulho faz Kim olhar para a máquina atrás deles, a vendo tremer, soltando faíscas. Ela logo se levanta assustada, e quando Sehun começa a tentar acalmá-la, a cena rapidamente muda para Taeyeon em meio a neve, fazendo o high note principal da canção enquanto a câmera gira ao seu redor.
O último refrão continua com cenas de Taeyeon tentando segurar a mão de Sehun, o puxando para longe da máquina, mas ele não parece estar nada preocupado. O pós-refrão chega, e cenas da cantora dublando a canção enquanto corre por entre as árvores da floresta são alternadas com a cena na qual ela corre para longe da máquina em mal funcionamento, segurando a mão de Sehun, que está tentando se soltar. Antes do final da música, Taeyeon olha pra trás e ainda vê o equipamento em curto-circuito, mas não vê mais Sehun, que desapareceu novamente. As últimas cenas de dublagem mostra a cantora dublando as high notes finais na floresta, enquanto a névoa volta a cercá-la, e a canção se acaba juntamente à um take de Taeyeon passando pela saída da fábrica, olhando em volta, procurando seu coadjuvante.
Após uma tela escura, uma última cena mostra um take noturno de Taeyeon correndo na neve, se afastando da fábrica, enquanto uma música diferente toca no fundo, em volume muito baixo. Ela foi rapidamente descoberta como parte da soundtrack de Kirby 64, jogo dos anos 90, no qual a faixa é nomeada Factory Inspection, sendo tocada na parte do jogo localizada em uma fábrica.
