Em dezembro de 2017, Taeyeon, Tifanny, Seohyun, Sunny, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona e Hyoyeon saíram da SM Entertainment após 10 anos na maior empresa do k-pop ao decidir não renovar seus contratos. Em janeiro de 2018, elas lançaram uma carta assinadas pelas 8 em suas redes sociais, falando um pouco sobre a decisão feita no mês anterior e sobre seus futuros, como solistas e como integrantes do Girls' Generation, afirmando que nunca tiveram a intenção de dar um fim ao grupo, mas que sua continuidade dependeria de possibilidades e oportunidades. Ao longo do ano, diversas notícias foram publicadas sobre o período de negociação dos direitos do nome do grupo, uma longa batalha jurídica entre as soshis e a SM. Enquanto isso, cada uma delas focou em atividades solo até o atual ano de 2019. Continuando com foco na música como solistas, Taeyeon, Tifanny, Yoona, e também Hyoyeon, que começou suas aventuras como DJ. Yuri, Sunny, Seohyun e Sooyoung, por sua vez, focaram no ramo da moda e da atuação.
Hoje, o inesperado foi finalmente anunciado. Após negociações que vêm sido feitas desde o primeiro semestre desse ano, as soshis e a R. Entertainment obteram os direitos sobre o nome do grupo. O novo contrato, assinado no começo desse mês de agosto, 12 anos após o debut do grupo em 2007, ainda mantêm os direitos de cada integrante como solista cedidos à gravadoras como a Moonlight e a Arcade, enquanto Taeyeon, Yuri e Hyoyeon, continuam na Resistance. A notícia foi dada em primeira mão através das próprias soshis, que reativaram as redes sociais do grupo e postaram uma foto juntas.
